Reader's letter: Rethink options
When the huge LAMMA show was held in Newark, effective traffic management was always discussed at length.
Working at a business on Newark Showground I was involved in these discussions, and got talking to a traffic consultant who had been involved with the initial planning of Newark’s bypass.
Apparently, the reason that the carriageway is so wide but only single lane was because a tidal flow system of three lanes (with ticks and crosses on gantries regulating middle lane use depending on traffic volumes) was originally envisaged.
Only cost stopped the implementation at the time.
Is this plan not worth a revisit for the short / medium term? — IAN CARTER, via email.
