Retro night to take place at St Giles Hall on Main Street, Balderton to raise funds for a new floor at the community centre

A DJ is organising a retro night to help pay for a new £25,000 community centre floor.

Paul Walker, of Newark Disco — a mobile disco and entertainment company — has organised the charity event for Friday (June 7).

He decided to put it on after seeing an appeal for help for the main hall at St Giles Community Centre, Balderton.

The floor in the hall started to collapse and, when a portion was lifted to be inspected about two-and-a-half months ago, it revealed a raised water table and the floor was soaking wet and rotten.

The DJ is aiming to raise £700 from ticket sales and is encouraging any businesses in the area who wish to donate any raffle prizes to do so in order to bring in more funds.

“The hall is used by so many community groups throughout the week, including guides and brownies, but also for families for birthday parties and it would be a great loss to the community if it had to close,” said Paul.

Hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s will ring out in the St Giles Hall between 7.30pm to 11.30pm.

Newark Disco posted on its social media channels asking people what sort of music they would like to hear at the charity disco, and the suggestions led to the retro party theme.

The whole floor in the main hall was deemed unsafe until it could be replaced. It will cost £12,000 just for the materials to support the floor — and the total cost is expected to be between £25,000 and £30,000.

At the event there will be no bar or food available, however, people are welcome to bring their own alcohol or soft drinks and nibbles.

The £10 ticket can be bought from the Newark Disco website or by calling 01636336000.

The main hall’s floor has now been repaired with funds borrowed to the church, which manages the community centre, and the event is aimed at helping collect funds for the repayment.
