Retro night at St Giles Hall on Main Street, Balderton raises funds for a new floor at the community centre
A retro night raised over £800 to help pay for a new £25,000 community centre floor.
Paul Walker, of Newark Disco — a mobile disco and entertainment company — has organised the charity event to support the community.
The evening, which saw 65 people, raised £840 to help support the costs of the repair of the main hall at St Giles Community Centre in Balderton.
Paul said: “It is always a worry organising any event wondering if people are going to purchase tickets, etc.
“But when you see a room full of people including some in fancy dress with a packed dance floor all evening and so many compliments after the event asking when the next one is going to be, you know it’s been a huge success.”
The evening included hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s and people were welcome to bring their own alcohol, soft drinks and nibbles as there were no bar or food available.
The floor in the hall started to collapse and, when a portion was lifted to be inspected about two-and-a-half months ago, it revealed a raised water table and the floor was soaking wet and rotten.
The whole floor in the main hall was deemed unsafe until it could be replaced. It will cost £12,000 just for the materials to support the floor — and the total cost is expected to be between £25,000 and £30,000.
The main hall’s floor has now been repaired with funds borrowed to the church, which manages the community centre, and the event is aimed at helping collect funds for the repayment.
Newark Disco’s next main event is a New Year Disco on January 4 at Newark Showground.
The evening will feature four singers direct from London's West End who have appeared in Jersey Boys and pay tribute to the legendary Frankie Valli & The four seasons called The West End Jersey's.
