Newark: Return of secondary schools will be delayed in a government u-turn

The return of secondary schools will be delayed in a government u-turn, the education secretary has announced.

Gavin Williamson said exam year students will return on January 11, with other secondary school students to follow a week later on January 18.

Most primary schools will open as planned on January 4.

However, Mr Williamson said some primary schools in areas with the highest of coronavirus rates will not open on that date.

It comes after the government said yesterday it would stick to its plans for returning primary and older secondary school children to school next week.

Teaching unions and scientists have suggested delaying the holidays until later January would be more appropriate.
