Newark and Sherwood District Council in partnership with Newark Town Board through the Newark Heart project, brings sunflower, bee, and butterfly installations back to Newark Market Place

Bees, butterflies, and sunflowers have returned to Newark Market Place to add some colour for visitors.

Now in its second year, the installation, organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council in partnership with Newark Town Board through the Newark Heart project, was so well received last year that it was decided to bring back the iconic installations.

The display aims to spread a positive message about biodiversity and the environment, and features an array of handcrafted and recyclable artwork.

Matthew Gleadell, town clerk at Newark Town Council, said: “The colourful bunting and charming market place decorations cannot fail to add a bit of extra joy to a visit to the town centre.

“With an array of events once again planned for the town centre this year the colourful decorations help to add a welcoming ambience to the town.”

The project has been funded through the Newark Towns Fund, UK Shared Prosperity Fund scheme, Arts Council England as well as part funded by Newark Town Council. It will remain in position until the end of Summer.

Claire Penny, portfolio holder for sustainable economic development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “We’re lucky in Newark to have a marketplace that can really benefit from installations like this to make the area look even more bright and welcoming.

“We hope to have the same impact again this year and we encourage visitors to come and see the art and other events happening for themselves. You can also explore our beautiful town centre by visiting our wonderful independent shops and have lunch in one of our fantastic pubs, cafes or restaurants.”

Newark Creates will also be host the free Streets Ahead event on Sunday 15 June, in association with SO Festival, where the international Street Theatre and Outdoor Arts show will return to the Market Place against the backdrop of the art installation and will include international acrobats, dance and modes of fun transport.
