Organiser of Newark Christmas Tree Festival Rita McCall awarded British Empire Medal in 2025 King’s Birthday Honours list

A Newark woman who is best known for bringing festive joy to the town has been named in the King’s Birthday Honours list in recognition of the good work she does in the community.

Every year, the King recognises outstanding individuals across the UK who have made a lasting impact to their country or community — and the 2025 Birthday Honours have had a particular focus on public service.

Now Rita McCall, 80, has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to the community of Newark in recognition of her work.

Rita is perhaps best known for her role as organiser of the Newark Christmas Tree Festival, which for the past 16 years has dazzled and delighted visitors every festive season.

Upon hearing the news, she said: “I was absolutely taken aback.

“When I opened the letter addressed from Downing street, I couldn’t believe it was real.

“At first it felt a little silly that I should receive this for organising a Christmas tree festival but, when I thought about it, the festival is a lovely occasion and something which bring people from all walks of life together.

“It also takes a lot of work to organise, and even though I am the one receiving this award, it’s really a team effort and this is for the whole team.

“The festival is a truly joyful thing to be a part of and I look forward to being involved for many years to come.”

After the success of last year’s festival, which was held in the Buttermarket while the usual location of the parish church is closed for restoration, Rita decided to hang up her organisational hat.

She remains a dedicated volunteer at the parish church and other parts of the community, and despite taking a step back says she will continue to help out with the festival.

Rita is just one of 23 people from across Nottinghamshire to have been recognised in the honours list.

Speaking about the announcement, Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire Professor Veronica Pickering said: “I am delighted that our county is once again represented in His Majesty’s Honours List.

“These recipients have gone above and beyond in service to others, and this national recognition is richly deserved.

“Their achievements reflect the very best of our communities - dedication, compassion, and a commitment to making a difference.”

The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, added: “This year’s Birthday Honours List is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and service that exists in every corner of our country.

"From community champions to cultural icons, each recipient reflects the very best of Britain.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them all.”
