Sinkhole forces full closure of Southwell road

A sinkhole has forced authorities to close a busy town centre road.

A short stretch of Market Place/Westgate, Southwell, has been closed near the mini roundabout.

A diversion is in place round Westgate, Allenby Road, Queen Street, the Ropewalk and Lower Kirklington Road.

In a Facebook post Southwell Town Council stated: “At present no further information, we will update as soon as possible. Please avoid the area.”

Three-way traffic lights had previously been installed after the sinkhole opened up earlier this week.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s highways incident response team responded to the sinkhole, and it remains under investigation.

Nottingham City Transport’s 26 service through the town is also operating on a diversion route.

The operator stated: “Pathfinder 26 will operate the reverse of its outbound route via The Ropewalk, Queens Rd, Halam Rd, Allenby Rd and Westgate due to an incident in Southwell.

“Buses will be Hail and Ride whilst on diversion, please request the bus in plenty of time for the driver to stop safely.”
