A614 improvements a big step forward for Sherwood Forest, writes Michelle Welsh MP, but work will continue
I’m absolutely delighted to share some fantastic news for our area – the long-overdue improvements to the A614 are finally going ahead, writes Sherwood Forest MP, Michell Welsh.
This is a huge win for Sherwood Forest and part of the largest transport investment programme in the country. After years of campaigning and persistence, we are seeing real progress.
These upgrades aren’t just about tarmac and traffic flow. They will unlock new jobs, attract business investment, and improve safety for everyone who travels through our area – whether it’s getting to work, school, or visiting family.
For too long, poor transport infrastructure has held back growth in Sherwood Forest. This investment changes that.
But we’re not stopping here.
This summer, the Mayor’s Transport Plan consultation gives us another opportunity to push for the full restoration and expansion of the Robin Hood Line. Connecting more of our towns and villages to
Nottingham and beyond by rail will open up opportunities for work, education, and leisure while reducing congestion on our roads. I’ll be making the strongest possible case to ensure this vital project gets the support it deserves.
And while we celebrate investment in roads and rail, I’m also determined not to forget those who rely on our bus services. Many of our villages simply don’t have reliable public transport, leaving residents isolated and without options. When the revenue funding becomes available, I’ll be pressing hard for better, more dependable bus routes – especially for rural communities.
The truth is, the East Midlands – and Sherwood Forest in particular – has been left behind for far too long. Our infrastructure hasn’t kept pace with the rest of the country, and our communities have felt the impact.
But this latest announcement shows that things are changing. It proves that when we make our voices heard, when we keep up the pressure, and when we come together as a community – we can secure the investment we deserve.
I’ll keep fighting to make sure Sherwood Forest continues to get its fair share in transport and in every other area that matters to our residents. We’ve taken a big step forward, but there’s more to do – and I’m ready for the challenge.
