Newark MP and Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick — being central in government during the coronavirus coronavirus is an intense experience
Newark MP Robert Jenrick said being a central part of government at a time of such unprecedented worldwide crisis was an intense experience.
Mr Jenrick was at the centre of several national media news articles when it was revealed he travelled from London to Herefordshire to be with his family, and also went to his parents’ home 40 miles away to deliver medicine, during the lockdown.
He attracted further criticism for revealing his family home was in Herefordshire.
“I explained the trips I made at the time and I am confident they are within the social distancing guidelines and it is important we all abide by them,” he said.
“I don’t think anyone could doubt my commitment to the Newark constituency and it has been the privilege of my life — to be elected four times in less than six years.
“I love coming home to Newark and spending as much time as I possibly can in the local community and working with people in local businesses, and I will continue to do that as much as I can.”
Mr Jenrick has been at the centre of the government response to the pandemic, regularly appearing at the national briefings.
He said: “It has been an intense experience and we are all working very hard, but so are other people across the country, including in our own area. People are making enormous sacrifices.
“One of the reasons I came into politics was to make a contribution. While it has been busy and tiring, I have been able to play a part in the national effort.
“I am also grateful to my team, in particular Sue Gray, who has worked so hard to answer more letters and emails than I have ever received.”
