Rocketing fuel prices hit firms
Businesses that make a living out of driving are being hit by rising fuel costs.
According to the AA, petrol was 25p more expensive and diesel 141/2p more expensive in January than the same time a year ago.
This week the average prices of the ten petrol stations in and around Newark were 1121/2p for unleaded and 114.2p for diesel.
Mr George Collis, who runs the George Collis School of Motoring, Newark, said the rising fuel prices were putting up his costs.
He said since November the cost of diesel in Newark had risen from 99p a litre to 113.9p, meaning he was spending about £20 a week extra for fuel.
The owner of Z Cars, Miss Caroline Moore, said their bill for diesel each month had gone up by 25% in two years.
She said taxi prices, set by the district council, had increased at the normal rate each year but did not compensate for the rising fuel costs.
Mr Gerald Dickens, of Newark hauliers J. R. Marriott (Collingham) Ltd, feared the worst was yet to come.
