Improvements to the A46's cattle market, Brownhills and Friendly Farmer roundabouts enter its second phase
Work to carry out essential safety and maintenance work on three major Newark roundabouts moves into its second phase a week tomorrow.
The six-month programme to improve the A46 cattle market, Brownhills and Friendly Farmer roundabouts began in January and is due to last until August.
Work will move from the cattle market roundabout to the Friendly Farmer roundabout on Tuesday, April 23.
It will include full spiral markings to the roundabout, full re-surfacing, reduction of lanes from four to three lanes on the A46 southbound approach, replacing high friction surfacing, and adding high friction surfacing to the A1 sliproad.
Signage will be replaced, the footway and cycleway will be renewed, and landscaping on the central landscaping will also be renewed.
The Friendly Farmer roundabout is acknowledged to be hard to negotiate because of the number of cars and heavy goods vehicles using it.
It is hoped that reducing it from four lanes to three will help people get in the right lane.
The work, costing £3m, is being phased, with one roundabout at a time being improved, and most of the work taking place between 8pm and 5am.
It is being carried out by nmcn on behalf of Highways England, with work planned to keep disruption to a minimum.
Official diversion signs for external traffic will be in place but local motorists may find their own alternatives.
All the planned roadworks may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
The work on the A46 Brownhills roundabout will be the final phase to be undertaken, between May and August.
It will include widening of the A1 northbound exit slip road, reduction of slope gradient, ditch realignment, full spiral markings to the roundabout, full resurfacing, new street lighting, new signage, a new drainage system, and renewal of landscape on the central island.
