Newark Town Council planning committee opposed to XGate Fish Bar sale of alcohol application

A council has opposed a fish and chip shop’s application for the sale of late-night refreshments including alcohol.

XGate Fish Bar, 51 Castlegate, Newark has applied for a license to extend opening hours and sell late-night refreshments and alcohol (off the premises).

Members of the Newark Town Council planning committee have opposed the application for the sale of alcohol based on the potential increase of anti-social behaviour.

The chippy is owned by Aygun Acinik, who also owns Club X in Newark’s Corn Exchange, just across the street, which is open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

“The sale of alcohol is what concerns me in terms of anti-social behaviour,” said Barbara Corrigan.

The applicant, Prabath Suresh Mahendran, applied for the sale of late-night refreshments Monday to Wednesday from 11pm to 1.30am, Thursday to Saturday from 11pm to 3.30am and Sunday from 11pm and 11.30pm.

The requested hours for the sale of alcohol, off the premises, are Monday to Thursday from 11am to 1.30am and Friday to Sunday from 11am to 3.30am.

The opening hours of the chippy are from Monday to Wednesday from 11am to 1.30am, Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 3.30am and non-standard timings including bank holidays, Christmas eve and new yeas eve are from 11am to 3.30am.

Matthew Skinner said: “This is anticipating disaster. I can’t ever support this.

“You have people coming out of these venues, going to the chip shop, may look sober and probably aren’t, buy several bottles of cans of whatever it might be, I can’t imagine the police would ever support this.

“It is an offence to drink on Castlegate, there are signs all over. Why would they allow someone to go into some premises, walk down with a can or bottle of wine and consume it on the street?”

Committee members showed their interest in hearing Nottinghamshire Police’s input on the idea of the chippy selling alcohol.

Laurence Goff suggested having security at the XGate Fish Bar like at the nightclub to ensure people’s safety.

The comments are to be forwarded to Newark and Sherwood District Council no later than September 9, so the district council can make a final decision.
