Scaffolding removed as Newark Castle repairs completed
The scaffolding around Newark Castle has been removed as repairs have been completed.
Essential works have been carried on the historic monument after a member of the public spotted a large crack on its curtain wall.
The area around the damage which faced the River Trent was cordoned off and scaffolding erected as Newark and Sherwood District Council – who owns the ancient building – called in experts to investigate and carry out repair.
The work which was expected to be finished by the weekend was carried out by Skillingtons, a building conservation specialist.
Damaged stones were replaced and the cracks filled in with mortar resembling the original stones of the castle.
Newark Castle, founded in the mid 12th Century by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, attracts hundreds of tourists every year.
The curtain wall, including the central tower are a 14th Century addition.
