Suthers School, Fernwood, celebrates success of first large-scale musical
A secondary school in Fernwood is celebrating the outstanding success of its first large-scale musical.
Pupils from the Suthers School performed Matilda The Musical, a show based on the book written by Roald Dahl in 1988.
A total of 33 pupils in years seven to 11 took part in two performances in front of sell-out crowds at the school.
Matilda was produced in conjunction with Musical Theatre International, who licensed the script and the music.
Head Nicola Watkin said: “The exceptional dedication and commitment from all students and staff involved in the show certainly demonstrated their hard work to make this show hugely successful.
“I would like to thank all parents, carers, students and staff who came to support over the two evenings.
“I still have a huge smile on my face and I am sure many of the audience will have too.
“I am really looking forward to holding more events throughout the year to showcase the creative arts.”
The musical has been performed all over the world including in the West End in London and Broadway in New York, so the pupils were following in some very famous footsteps.
There are currently plans for a Netflix film adaptation.
Year nine pupil Bianca said: “I’m really glad that I got to have this experience and meet so many amazing people.
“We have been limited during covid with any performances or even mixing with other year groups.
“I have really appreciated working with other in other year groups. I want to say thank you to all the staff that have used their time and patience to create this show.”
Mariana, a year eight pupil, said: “I can’t for the next performance.”
Everyone who saw the production was said to have been left in awe of the talent on show from the youngsters, some of whom were performing for the first time.
The feeling by all those who attended was summed up by one parent who said: “Wow, simply amazing and so professional.”
