Author Gareth Baker is Coddington Primary School’s new reading and writing patron
Budding young authors were given a masterclass in their reading and writing skills by an author.
Gareth Baker visited Coddington Primary School to meet the staff and children to celebrate becoming the school’s new reading and writing patron.
Mr Baker’s involvement is part of a new scheme, Patrons of Reading, where authors are linked with schools to promote reading and writing not just on schools, but at home with their families.
Mrs Lisa Fox, year three class teacher, said: “Having Gareth come into school and talk the the pupils made it more real for them.
“He did two assemblies and gave his top tips about reading and writing and the children loved him, he was so engaging.”
Mr Baker then visited each year group to talk the the children to promote the importance of reading for fun and encouraged them to write every day.
He also gave the children some of his books for the school library, and the children could have their own books signed.
Mrs Fox said: “We had a free writing session where the children were writing their own stories.
“The children were really taking on board what he was saying and he was good with them.
“It’s so great to have someone like Gareth come in to talk to the children. They were so excited and it has really helped to raise the profile of reading and writing.”
Mr Baker will be visiting the school throughout the year to run more sessions with the children.
