Newark and Sherwood creatives welcomed to the Secret Garden Studios, on Stodman Street, as lockdown eases

Hidden in the heart of Newark town centre is an art space ready to get your creative juices flowing.

Welcoming artists of all talents and capabilities — from poets to oil painters and first-timers to seasoned professionals — is the Secret Garden Studios at 6 Stodman Street.

Set in a former coach house and previously a café, Liz Goulding and Clair Robshaw have recreated a space where they hope creatives can learn, share and thrive at their own pace.

Clair, an author of many genres, and Liz, a painter and teacher for 30 years, run their courses alongside each other — and are set to take advantage of their trendy environment as lockdown eases.

“The space is so useful when doing workshops because you’ve got inspiration right here,” said Clair. “All you need to do is look out of the window and you can see our beautiful garden.

“It makes you feel just so relaxed and creative.”

Liz uses the upstairs for her painting classes while Clair utilises the downstairs for writing workshops.

They hope to branch into the garden wherever they can, with the aim to get people from varying courses to communicate and bounce off of each other.

“We are going to try as many different ways of bringing people together through creative enterprises,” said Liz. “We are starting with the workshops and developmental classes and bringing in visiting artists.

“Wherever you are on your creative journey, we can take you forward.”

The classes are designed so you don’t have to bring anything with you. Clair and Liz thought this important so sessions were worry-free.

There is also a room to rent to anyone wanting to hold an event, with talks already ongoing for a mindfulness session and plans for Newark Book Festival.

Sessions will be held in groups of five for now.

Anyone booking between now and June 2 will be entered in to a draw to win a £30 gift voucher.

Those booking ten workshops will get one free.

Akin to its name, Secret Garden Studios is hidden at the back of Gallery 6 — a completely separate business — on Stodman Street.
