Serial Newark shoplifters, drink-drivers, and assaults among latest cases sentenced at Nottingham Magistrates Court




A thief who made off with numerous bottles of wine and other goods over a two month period has been given a suspended sentence.

James Bunch, 37, of Strawberry Hall Lane, Newark, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on September 25, to be sentenced for the multiple shop thefts, all of which he admitted.

On June 15, Bunch stole coffee and wine worth £40 from Co-op, Bowbridge Road; on June 18, he took food of an unknown value from Co-op, Lincoln Road; on June 28, and he made off with meat and washing powder worth £100 from Co-op, Side Row.

On July 3, the offender stole a case of wine worth £366 from Majestic Wines, Newark; on July 8 Bunch took two bottles of wine of an unknown value from Aldi, Newark; and on July 10, he made off with six bottles of wine worth £78 from Majestic Wines, Newark.

Bunch was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months due to a “realistic prospect of rehabilitation” for the theft of the case of wine, with no seperate penalty for the other offences.

He must also complete six months of alcohol treatment, ten days of rehabilitation activity, and pay costs of £239.

• On September 26, repeat offender Naomi Pugh, 40, of Newnham Road, Newark, was handed a community order for shoplifting offences, which she admitted.

On January 6, Pugh stole £123 of items from Asda Newark; on January 7, she took £150 worth of items from Marks and Spencer; and on January 12 she made off with chocolate, sandwiches and Cathedral City cheese, to the value of £5.84 from Welcome Break, Fernwood. On January 13, she stole £60 of items from Home Bargains; and on January 28, Pugh took two sports supplements worth £50 from Holland and Barrett, Stodman Street.

Pugh’s offences continued into February, when she took a bottle of wine worth £79.99 from Majestic Wine, on February 4; and on February 16 she made off with £4.50 worth of chocolate from Lincolnshire Co-op, Bowbridge Road.

On March 11, the shoplifter stole four joints of meat worth £103.23 from Marks and Spencer; on May 14 Pugh stole £15 of food items from Co-op, Side Row; and on the same day a burger worth £3.50 from the same store. On May 17, she made off with £73 of steak and champagne from Marks and Spencer.

For these offences, Pugh must pay a total of £465.07 in compensation, a £200 fine, and complete rehabilitation activity.

On the same day, she faced two driving offences. On July 3, 2024, she drove a vehicle on Goldstraw Lane, Fernwood, while under the influence of cocaine and while uninsured.

Pugh was disqualified from driving for 36 months and ordered to participate in rehabilitation activity.

• The case of Kenan Hills, 20, of Forest Road, Ollerton, was also heard on September 26.

He had pleaded guilty to two assaults, of different people, with one occasioning actual bodily harm. These both took place on April 13, in Ollerton.

Hills was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and 15 days of rehabilitation activity for each offence, and must also pay compensation of £50 to one victim.

• Speeding driver Ashley Mulvey, 47, of Tithe Lane, Calverton, pleaded guilty on September 29 to travelling at 98mph in a 70mph speed limit.

The offence occurred when Mulvey was driving a Vauxhall on the A46 at Cotgrave, on July 11.

He was fined £246, had six points added to his licence, and was ordered to pay costs of £218.

• Royce Lonsdale, 82, of Mountney Place, Newark, appeared in court on October 1, where he admitted a common assault offence which took place on September 29.

Lonsdale was ordered to pay costs of £125, and was fined and detained in the court in default of payment, with the total amount enforced £100.

• Drink-driver Ethan Wright, 22, of Tithby Road, Cropwell Butler, was banned from driving when he appeared before Magistrates on October 2.

Wright admitted to driving a BMW in Cropwell Butler on April 4, with 130 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, over the legal limit.

He was disqualified for 12 months, reduced by three months on completion of a course, and fined £382.

Wright must also pay costs of £238.

• Also sentenced on October 2 was Callum Woodcock, 18, of Lower Kirklington Road, Southwell.

Woodcock admitted drink-driving in Averham on September 11, with 86 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, more than double the legal limit.

He was disqualified from driving for 20 months, with a 20 week reduction for completion of a course, fined £140, and ordered to pay costs of £85.

• Bradley Jones, 33, of Lincoln Road, Newark, was sentenced for multiple offences, all of which he pleaded guilty to, on October 6.

On October 3, Jones stole whiskey and Disaronno worth £100, used threatening or abusive behaviour towards another person, and assaulted that same person by beating.

Jones then also assaulted PCSO Andrew Mighall.

The offences all occurred at Waitrose, Newark.

Jones was ordered to pay compensation of £100 for the first victim, and £100 for the assault of PCSO Mighall. He was also sentenced to two four-month custodial sentences, to be served concurrently, due to his “flagrant disregard for people and their property”.

• Christopher Brook, 41, of Rio Drive, Collingham, was sentenced for motoring offences on October 6.

On February 9, he exceeded the 30mph limit on the A6011 Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford, while driving a Mercedes at 38mph.

Brook admitted the offence and was fined £666, had three points added to his licence, and was ordered to pay costs of £386.

The motorist was also sentenced for a second speeding offence, which he again admitted, when he drove a Volkswagen at 36mph on the 30mph limited B6166 Lincoln Road, Newark, on May 3.

For this offence, Brook was fined £666, ordered to pay costs of £120, and has three points added to his licence. He avoided disqualification due to the impact on his work, mortgage, family, and caring responsibilities for older relatives.

• On the same day, Yvonne Wilkinson, 54, of Threadneedle Way, Newark, was disqualified from driving for six months.

The Ssangyong driver admitted to travelling at 36mph on Bowbridge Road, which has a 30mph limit, on April 15.

As well as the disqualification, Wilkinson received three notional penalty points, was fined £229, and ordered to pay costs of £212.

• Kirsty Parr, 35, of Friars Crescent, Newark, was before the court on October 8 for sentencing.

Parr admitted to, on February 5, causing racially aggravated harassment to PC 3981 Hussain, in Balderton.

On the same day, she assaulted another person, and, between March 3 and April 8, harassed this same person by sending emails.

Parr was fined £60 for the racially aggravated harassment, and for the two other offences was given a community order including 60 days of alcohol abstinence and monitoring, and 12 days of rehabilitation activity.

She must also pay costs of £85.

• Alistair Paterson, 40, of no fixed abode in Newark, was jailed for shoplifting offences on October 8.

Paterson admitted the charges, which were theft of £80 worth of cheese from Lincolnshire Co-Op, Albert Street, on September 3; meat worth £51.60 from Lincolnshire Co-Op, Barnbygate, on September 7; and theft of £34.30 of coffee from Lincolnshire Co-Op, Lincoln Road, on September 24.

For each offence, the thief was given a four week custodial sentence, to be served concurrently, due to his ‘poor record for theft offences’.

Paterson must also pay £165.90 in compensation.

• Samuel Munton, 38, of Carmelita Avenue, Fernwood, was sentenced for an assault occasioning actual bodily harm on October 10.

He admitted the offence, which took place on March 8.

Munton was ordered to pay £1,500 in compensation, was fined £623, and must pay costs of £334.
