Reader’s letter: Shop memories

I’m 63 and with the loss of yet another shop, Osbornes, I was thinking of other shops long gone from Newark town centre.

Some were family businesses like Bonner and Porter, Bruce and Chambers, George Francis and Ken Coynes. Some were supermarkets like Fine Fare, Somerfields and even Iceland was on Stodman Street for a while.

Who remembers Fords and Supersave on Cartergate?

I'm old enough to remember Wilkos when it was on Carter gate, before it moved to St Marks via where Boyes is now.

Finally, not strictly a shop, but the Savoy Cinema on Middlegate.

I remember going to see a film there in 1977, just before my 17th birthday.

It was the summer, it was hot and for two hours the whole cinema was transported to another world.

That film was Star Wars.

The rest is history. — P. DUDDLES, Balderton.
