Shop Newark campaign sees customers flock to support independent retailers
Shoppers enjoyed exclusive deals and entertainment as independent retailers united to encourage more people to Shop Newark.
More than 40 independent retailers took part in the day of action and organisers said it was a success with many shoppers taking advantage of the deals and discounts on offer.
One of the organisers Laura Cook, of Kingsman Interiors, said: “The response we got from not just independent shop owners but also customers, it was just a really positive feel-good day.
“Newark was buzzing. It was nice to walk through and see people and the shops full.
“It was a really positive day, which was what the aim of the event was about.”
Petit Versailles was one of the businesses involved. Although businesses owner Hajra Kemari could not be there on the day, she asked her 85-year-old mum, Juleka Amade, to open up the shop so they could still take part.
Hajra said: “My fellow retailers worked hard to come up with fresh ideas and special offers, so although I was away on holiday I couldn’t let the town down; I asked her to help cover for me and she said yes right away.”
In addition to the offers, #ShopNewark hosted a competition where lucky winner, Christine Southern, won a day’s worth of prizes, including a £100 voucher for Lace Boutique, Masdings, Kingsman Interiors, Giles & Bella, and a £50 voucher for Emma Jayne Home.
Christine also received a breakfast at the Bean & Vine, champagne from Ann et Vin and a lunch at the Loft & Carriages.
The organisers are hoping to plan more events.
They are also organising a draw, where children can collect a colouring in sheet from BeanBlock café and then drop it back off when they are done.
All of the drawing entries will be collected and one will be selected at random on October 8, to win prizes.
