High Street Spotlight: Independent business Access Models, on Castlegate, Newark, launches ‘Love Modelling’ campaign to spark interest in model making hobby
An independent business is urging people to grab their paint brushes and glue, and try something new, as part of a campaign celebrating their hobby.
Access Models, on Castlegate, Newark, is well known as a one stop shop for everything when it comes to model making, from niche kits and paints, to equipment and expert knowledge.
Now, the shop is hoping to inspire more people to get involved by showcasing what is possible through the launch of the ‘Love Modelling’ campaign.
Co-owner, Gayle Durham, said: “It’s about celebrating the community.
“There are so many different areas of modelling — wargaming, model airplanes, RC [radio-controlled] cars, model trains — and we wanted to showcase all the talented people that participate.
“They are also so knowledgeable, that sometimes we get people come in and ask a question and another customer will have the answer straight away.
“So we have launched to share all these tips and tricks, photos of the amazing creations, and hopefully encourage more people to consider giving it a go.
“It’s pulling together people from all parts of the community to tell stories and sparking an interest for other.”
Gayle and her husband Tim took over the shop in 2022 after former owner Steve Clark retired following 42 years of trading in the town.
Their aim is to share their passion for modelling and keep the much-loved business going for future generations of enthusiasts to enjoy.
As part of the campaign, the shop is holding a competition, where hobbyists can share photos of their painted model creations, to be in with the chance of winning a £20 gift voucher for the shop.
All participants need to do is post their photo on social media using the hashtag #LoveAccessModelling. The competition will close on February 28.
“It’s been interesting doing this campaign and seeing people talk so enthusiastically about their passions,” said Gayle.
“It’s also for everyone. It doesn’t matter who you are and we are very keen to encourage young people to try it out.
“It’s also a reminder that we are here, and people can pop in whenever they like.
“Our main thing is about giving the best possible customer service and we are always happy to help.”
Gayle hopes to keep the ‘Love Modelling’ campaign going so that people can continue to share their creations.
There are also plans to run similar modelling competitions throughout the year, and to work with schools around Newark who may be interest in visiting the shop and learning more about the hobby.
