A gallery's next exhibition will showcase the art of violin-making and the history of the Newark International School of Violin Making.

The exhibition at Gallery 6, on Stodman Street, Newark, will feature artwork, violins, programmes and photographs.

The Newark School of Violin Making was the inspiration of Maurice Bouette, a violin maker, who was born in London in 1922, and was the school’s director.

He was born into a musical family, who were also craftsmen, and started making violins through evening classes with William Luff, one of the best-known British luthiers.

In 1972, Maurice accepted the challenge of starting a new school of violin-making at Newark Technical College teaching full-time, with Wilfred Saunders helping out one day a week and then later with Glen Collins, William Luff’s nephew.

The school went from strength to strength and now enjoys worldwide recognition with former students employed in workshops all over the world.

The official opening ceremony of new premises at Kirkgate took place in April 1978 in the presence of Yehudi Menuhin.

These photographs along with other information concerning the school will be available during the exhibition, which runs until May 28.

The gallery would like to thank Floriane Forconi, violin restorer and workshop manager of The Luthiers Valse at South Church House, Newark Market Place, for supplying the information relating to the history of the school and also to Maurice's grandson, Will Bouette, for photographs and programmes which will be available to see during the exhibition.
