Siblings organise bake-off fundraiser

A brother and sister organised a charity bake-off in school after being inspired to raise money by their father’s battle with cancer.

Alfie White, 11, and his sister, Ella, 9, are supporting Stand Up To Cancer, which funds life-saving research.

Their father, Mr Neil White, 45, has myeloma, a cancer that affects the blood’s plasma cells.

His children, having seen television’s Great Celebrity Bake Off, which aired on Channel Four earlier this month, decided to hold their own bake-off at their school, Archbishop Cranmer Primary Academy, Aslockton.

Alfie said: “It has been a lot of work. We made all the decorations, and made and put up all the posters.

“It has taken two or three weeks. We didn’t think we would get many but there were a lot of cakes. Everyone really wanted to do it.”

More than 50 cakes, muffins and biscuits were brought in.

Ella said they would be judged on taste and presentation.

“Me and Alfie are going to judge and then we will sell them in a bake sale,” she said.

“They can’t be dry and the bottoms can’t be too soggy.”

The siblings, from Bottesford, also put together a powerpoint presentation about Stand Up To Cancer and played it in assembly.

Ella said: “We wanted to show what the scientists are doing and give an example of one of the people with cancer and how they help.

“We also wrote about the bake-off and what we were going to do.”

Alfie said he was grateful to the research scientists who were searching for the latest cancer cures.

“They just help everyone so we wanted to help them,” he said.

“When we started we wanted to get £50, but now we are hoping to get a lot more than that.”

Academy head Mrs Kate Watson made a cheesecake. She said she was proud of Alfie and Ella.

“They are two absolute stars,” she said.

“They thought of the idea, planned everything and organised everything all by themselves.

“One of our school pledges is about taking care of others, and the response from the other children and parents is a good example of that.”
