Sign due to be corrected after mistake made in Newark Town centre

A temporary sign in a town centre has caused amusement after online revellers pointed out that it has been misspelled.

The flawed sign has Cartergate listed as Cater Gate.

It joined other new signs in the area for Baldertongate and Applegate, with the Cartergate sign due to be rectified soon.

“Residents may have noticed that temporary street signs have been put up around Newark town centre and the wider district,” said Peter Preece, estates manager for corporate property at Newark and Sherwood District Council.

“These are being used whist the existing heritage signs are being refurbished.

“The temporary signs will be in place for approximately four weeks when the refurbished heritage signs will be put back up.

The sign has joined others in the town while the heritage signs are being refurbished.

“The District Council has a responsibility to replace and refurbish street name plates and the public can advise us as such through an online form that can be found on our website, https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/streetname/

“We are aware that one of the signs, for Cartergate, has been put up with an error.

“This will be rectified today by our contractors.”
