THE tragic death of Deividas Jucys has touched many hearts. Floral tributes remain close to the scene on Friary Road, Newark, where the ten-year-old, known as David, died after being in collision with a car.

His fellow pupils at Mount Primary School made memory boards dedicated to him, and on Friday — the day of David’s funeral — released hundreds of balloons on the school field.

“We wanted to do something to focus on David to show we were thinking about him,” said headteacher Mrs Sandra Bunnell.

Advertiser reader Mr Jeremy Goldsmith, who did not know David or his family, was so moved by the terrible consequences of the accident on September 22 that he has` started an online petition calling for a pedestrian crossing to improve safety on Friary Road.

Dozens of people have already signed it.

Mr Goldsmith said it was a dangerous road, particularly for elderly, disabled and young pedestrians.

A lot of children use Friary Road as they walk to the Mount and Lover’s Lane schools.

Anything that would make their journey safer would be welcomed.

Mrs Bunnell supports the petition and is encouraging parents to sign it.

“It would be nice if some positive action was taken or improvements made on the back of what has happened,” she said.

The petition will be presented to Nottinghamshire County Council.

The more people who back it, the more weight it will carry when the council decides whether road safety improvements are justified.
