Southwell steps back in time for 140th anniversary of Catherdral town status

This August, Southwell will step back in time to celebrate 140 years since it became a Cathedral town.

To mark the occasion a special series of events with a Victorian theme have been designed for everyone to enjoy.

On Saturday, August 3 a Community Fun Day will take place from 10:30am to 3pm.

The day will be filled with free fun activities for the whole family, organised by Southwell Minster and the The National Trust team at Southwell Workhouse.

There will be a meet and greet with Victorian characters, as well as games and crafts.

Throughout the month Southwell’s high street will be transformed with bunting and creative Victorian shop window displays, which have been organised in association with Shop Southwell and Southwell Shops and Traders.

Those looking for a tasty treat will also be able to enjoy the Victoria Sponge trail, from August 1 to 31.

Visitors will try to spot all the baking ingredients hidden throughout the town and the trail has been completed participants will receive a special recipe card to bake their own Victoria sponge at home — maybe even pop into a café or two to indulge in a slice of cake along the way.

Southwell Minster will also continue to showcase their history through stories and artefacts in the Cathedral 140 Exhibition, revealing the rich history of the Minster, as well as the gardens, and palace.

Throughout August, the exhibition will spotlight the pivotal year of 1884, when Southwell was proudly designated a Cathedral Town.
