Newark MP Robert Jenrick talks about the chaos of Labour government

Labour has been in power just two months, and the country has already been plunged into chaos. — Writes Newark MP Robert Jenrick

The so-called £22 billion black hole ‘discovered’ by Rachel Reeves is a Labour creation, concocted through selfish political choices.

The grounds to raise your taxes have already been laid, and Labour will seize their first opportunity to do so despite everything they said in opposition and over the General Election campaign.

Winter fuel payments have been scrapped for 10 million pensioners, with the justification being that spending cuts were essential to avoid a loss in confidence by markets, a run on the pound, and potential economic catastrophe.

And yet, despite this reportedly imperative fiscal squeeze, the government has chosen to spend £10 billion paying off their union paymasters with excessive public sector pay rises for train drivers and others.

Not only has the government capitulated to the trade unions, but they have done so at the expense of the British public, particularly the elderly. To make matters worse, the Chancellor has not ruled out raising taxes on pensioners.

Let’s not forget, this is a government that is pouring over £8 billion into an energy company which doesn’t even produce any energy and is choosing to place ideological posturing ahead of practical solutions that would reduce people’s bills in the immediate term.

The last energy company Labour created was Robin Hood Energy and the people of Nottinghamshire know all too well how disastrous this was.

The approval of Gate Burton Energy Park by the Energy Secretary, just outside our constituency, is a clear indicator of Labour’s future intentions at the expense of crucial farmland.

It’s deeply concerning that we have a local Labour MP who accepted a significant donation from a large solar farm developer in our area during the General Election campaign, seemingly placing political and financial gain ahead of the interests of the people of Nottinghamshire. Labour is not interested in protecting the character and beauty of our countryside.

The absurdity doesn’t stop there. The Housing Secretary has slashed housing targets in cities while bumping them in rural Britain, and the Education Secretary has decided to make it unnecessarily difficult for parents to know whether they’re sending their children to good or bad schools.

The British people will quite literally pay for Labour’s poor political choices. I fear things are only going to get worse- not because they have to, but because of the decisions that Keir Starmer, and the Labour government will continue to make. I will fiercely oppose Labour’s terrible decisions and continue to stand up for our area.
