A student who decided to have her long hair cut to give to a charity that makes wigs for sick children went one step further and had her head shaved.

Naomi Stubbs, 14, of Newark, said she had seen other people having their hair cut for the Little Princess Trust and thought it was an amazing thing to do.

"I don’t label myself by my hair and wanted to make a point to anyone who has lost their hair that they are not on their own," she said.

Naomi has donated her hair to the charity before, but said this time she decided on the shave as well to raise money for Crohn’s and Colitis UK because her sister, Beth, 18, has ulcerative colitis.

Naomi said she felt emotional as she walked to her last-minute appointment at Toni and Guy, Newark, but as soon as she heard the first cut she knew she was going to go ahead with the head shave.

Her mother, Alison Stubbs, said: "The hairdresser made the whole experience relaxed and a lot of fun.

"She cut various styles getting shorter and shorter, giving Naomi the chance to enjoy the look and feel of each style."

Naomi said she loves her new look and her friends and family have said how much it suited her.

"It is so easy to look after and it doesn’t get tangled," she said.

Among the first to see her new style were her friends at Newark Raptors Scout group that evening, where they had a barbecue and water fight.

Naomi plans to get her hair shaved again before she returns to lessons at the Sir William Roberton School, Welbourn, after the summer holidays but then plans to grow it again.
