A student at the Dukeries College, Ollerton, is raising money so she can volunteer at an orphanage in Ghana, Africa.

Emma Pepper (17) hopes to spend two weeks at the Weep Not Child Orphanage.

She needs to raise £1,000 to cover her travel costs and accommodation.

Emma will be working as a teacher.

She said she was looking forward to meeting the children and seeing what they did for fun.

“Children in England tend to spend a lot of time on computer games and it will be good to get back to basics,” she said.

She hoped she could continue to help the orphanage after her trip.

She wants to talk about her travels to the college students on her return.

“I hope they will want to get involved and do something to raise money or go out there themselves and make a difference.”

Emma is currently completing A-levels in maths, physics and geography.

When she leaves school next year she hopes to become an engineer and begin an apprenticeship with the National Grid.
