The old problem of what to do about problem parking outside schools is back in the headlines, with Balderton’s Chuter Ede and John Hunt primary schools highlighted as having particular difficulties.

There has to be some sympathy for working parents rushing to get their children to school while trying to make sure they are not late themselves.

But for some, parking as close to the school gates as possible is borne out of nothing more than convenience for themselves.

Ask those who do it if they would be prepared to drop off and pick up further away, thereby easing congestion and reducing the risk of a youngster being badly hurt, or worse, and all but the most stubborn would agree to do it.

The last thing anyone wants is for there to be a serious incident before the message truly hits home.
