Newark MP Robert Jenrick showing support for town centre shops
Newark MP Robert Jenrick spent some of his constituency day on Friday demonstrating his support for some of the town's suffering shops.
Mr Jenrick said that with the threat of a local lockdown passed, shoppers should feel confident about returning to support their local retailers.
Among the shops that Mr Jenrick, the secretary of state for housing, communities and local government, visited was GH Porter Provisions, women's clothing store Ragazza and the Gannets cafe on Middlebeck.
Mr Jenrick said: "It’s time to back local shops in Newark, Bingham, Southwell and Tuxford. Our local independent shops need you.
"It’s been an exceptionally challenging time for local shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes, but we need to support them by shopping locally where we can.
"I’ve been visiting some of our local shops to hear how it’s going for them.
"They’ve been incredibly resilient, keeping going, doing home deliveries, diversifying, following the guidance on covid, but the number one message has been that they need our custom this autumn.
"It is safe to get into town as long as you remember your mask, so please do so."
