Balderton man Simon Bilton’s mobility scooter broke down, and the community rallied round to help

A man has thanked the community for coming together and offering help to an elderly person after his mobility scooter broke down.

David Avey, of Kingsway, Balderton, said he was pleasantly surprised by the act of kindness shown when Simon Bilton’s mobility scooter broke down, leaving him stranded.

Simon, also of Balderton, is unable to walk after a motorcycle crash.

He suffered a problem with his scooter’s steering rod at the Hawton Lane and London Road junction.

David said he came across the broken-down Simon at noon, and was helped by a young couple who phoned a mobility scooter repair company, but found no luck in getting through.

Still stranded, David phoned his friend Kevin Bryan, who, with his partner, asked a friend to bring a trailer after failing to get the scooter into their Transit van.

The young couple who encountered Simon took him home, while the others remained at the road-side for two hours fixing the broken-down scooter.

Kevin returned the scooter to Simon’s house fully fixed, and while he was there, he even fixed his garage door.

“To all four of you who helped, I thank you on behalf of Simon,” said David.

“It’s something you don’t expect from people any more. People just walk by.”

David said he was reminded of an incident reported in the national press, when a woman collapsed on the floor and no-one came to help for seven hours.
