Suspected drink-driver arrested in Newark after being found with children in car

A suspected drink-driver found slumped over, with children in the back of the car, has been arrested.

Paramedics attended Bowbridge Lane, Newark, on Monday, April 7, and notified the police after they discovered a driver slumped over the steering wheel, who they believed to be drunk.

Response officers had the same suspicions when they arrived at the scene, just before 4.10pm.

The keys for the parked car were also found in the ignition, while two young children were sitting in the back seat.

A roadside breathalyser test was then carried out, which suggested the driver was over the legal alcohol limit.

A 40-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and being drunk while in charge of children, and police have taken the opportunty to highlight the clear dangers posed during the incident.

Sergeant Matt Burgess, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to ever get behind the wheel while they’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“It really should go without saying but this point is doubly true if a child is in the vehicle with them at that time too.

“That decision to drive while intoxicated can lead to the worst consequences imaginable, with people sustaining life-changing injuries or worse.

“As the weather gets a bit warmer, there will be those who feel the temptation to have a drink and then drive home.

“Our message to them would be to stop and think about what could happen — it’s not worth it.

“That decision could ruin their lives and those of others too, while also landing them in trouble with the police.

“Thanks to the actions of the emergency services, a suspect was arrested at the scene in this incident, but they should count themselves as fortunate that nothing worse happened.”
