A former Newark schoolgirl has been awarded a prestigious engineering award while studying at university in London.

Lily Gregory was named as Engineering Undergraduate of the Year — sponsored by BAE Systems — at the 2024 Undergraduate of the Year Awards, where she beat off competition from thousands of other applicants as a result of her hard work and dedication.

Now in her second-year as a general engineering student at Kings College London, Lily formerly attended Barnby Road Academy in Newark and later the KSHSS Academy in Sleaford.

The national awards, organised by TargetJobs, is an annual competition aimed at celebrating the best of undergraduate talent in the country across the careers and employability arena.

Each award is partnered by a prominent graduate recruiter who provides a prize for the winner in their category — anything from a paid internship, to a trip abroad, or other exclusive opportunities.

Lily was recognised for her academic excellence alongside her commitment to community engagement, with a passion for getting more women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

She also initiated a mentorship scheme for women and non-binary undergrads, illustrating her dedication to nurturing future generations.

Lily also channels her passion for education through tutoring of younger students in maths and science, and this approach demonstrate her ability to become future leader in the field.

She saw off competition from nine other finalists in the category and was awarded at a ceremony held at The Pelligon in Canary Wharf, London.

She was presented with the award by comedian Sue Perkins, who gave a speech about the 'power of failure' at the ceremony.

Andrew Wright, associate director at King’s College London, said: “Congratulations to Lily for the incredible work she's been doing that has been recognised by this prestigious award”.
