John Carr is considered one of the most important and well-known architects. He worked largely in the North and Midlands during the Georgian period.

One of his finest works is Newark town hall, dating 1776, which sits in the middle of Market Place.

He designed the still-existing original Corn Exchange, the original Buttermaket, two fine town houses and the Georgian Assembly Rooms.

Carr also designed the Church of the Holy Rood for the Denison family at Ossington in 1783.

His work also included courthouses, racecourse grandstands, prisons, churches and hospitals - his largest work being that of Hospital de Santo Antonio in Porto, Portugal.

Admission to the talk is free, however, places are limited.

Those wishing to attend are to go to advise reception at Newark town hall or email the friends’ secretary at secretary@newarktownhallmuseum-friends.uk.
