Children from Highfields School, Newark, visited residents of the town’s Bishop Alexander Court retirement homes to deliver food parcels from their harvest festival.

Eleven pupils called in with colourful shoe boxes filled with items ranging from tinned beans, pasta and rice to shortbread and chocolates, as well as a note from each youngster to provide an extra personal touch.

The pupils stayed to chat with the residents and performed an impromptu medley of harvest festival songs, including Leeks And Beans And Cauliflower, much to the delight of their audience.

Teacher Mrs Kirsty Windle said it was important to involve the children in the community.

“Pupils at the school celebrated harvest festival before half-term, with everyone creating a harvest box to be sent out to a good cause,” she said.

“However, we also wanted to come out personally to deliver some of them.

“It is good for the children to have this experience.”

Bishop Alexander Court is managed by St Leonard’s Hospital Trust.
