Newark Tennis Club's club day and tournament has had to be cancelled today (Saturday) because of issues with Travellers.

A group of Travellers pulled on to the Lilley and Stone site several days ago and the club is accessed through the school site.

More Travellers have since joined those already illegally camped there.

A club spokesman said there were no issues to begin with, with both parties minding there own business, but the situation had now got out of hand.

The club alleges that children from the site broke into the clubhouse overnight, necessitating committee members to have to attend and secure it.

The spokesman said: "They have spread closer to the court perimeter and caused us this morning to cancel our club day/tournament after a few police incidents.

"Thankfully, Collingham Tennis Club have come to our rescue and said we can use their courts."

People have been seen entering the former school allegedly from the camp and it has been said that they have been eating at tables removed from the school's dining room and placed outside.

The Advertiser has attempted to contact the site's owners, the Lilley and Stone Trust, without success.
