Reader's letter: The time for action is now

More news, no ads

Following the Boycott BP Extinction Rebellion protests in Newark and Southwell, I would like to explain why we feel it is necessary to take this non-violent direct action.

The climate emergency is now, not in the future, and we have only a few years left for governments to take the drastic action needed to curb carbon emissions and preserve our chances of a liveable future.

At present the polar opposite is happening with governments encouraging, incentivising and licensing new fossil fuel projects.

The science is clear that this course of action, if allowed to continue, will ensure that global warming continues to accelerate, unleashing catastrophic consequences.

There is some understandable confusion about the climate crisis and how it can be addressed due to the amount of misinformation that is circulating, in no small part due to companies such as BP and Shell promoting narratives that undermine the truth of about climate change and its consequences.

Members of Extinction Rebellion are ordinary people who understand the science of climate change and the ways in which it is spiralling out of control much sooner that even the worst scientific predictions.

When you recognise this truth, it is impossible to ignore and to carry on with everyday life as usual.

The covid pandemic demonstrated that society can be changed overnight in an emergency by government policies and clear and urgent communication of the facts.

There is no greater emergency than the climate crisis and there are no other routes open to us if we are serious about saving the planet in the very limited time we have left.

For these reasons, Extinction Rebellion is the fastest-growing environmental organisation in the world.

I would like to encourage readers to join Newark and Sherwood XR and to take part in national and local actions to put pressure on government at all levels.

For those unable to take part in actions, for whatever reason, there are plenty of planning and support roles. Contact us on info@xrnewarkandsherwood.co.uk

There are roles for everyone. — WENDY PATTERSON, Collingham.
