Theatre wants to take charge

Permission is being sought to transfer the trusteeship of the Robin Hood Theatre, Averham, to its theatre company.

Nottinghamshire County Council is currently the trustee for the theatre, which closed in 2006 after failing to meet health and safety standards.

Mr Brendan Haigh, the chairman of the theatre’s management committee, said a joint approach was to be made to the Charity Commission to seek approval for the Robin Hood Theatre Company to assume the trusteeship in place of the county council, giving the voluntary-run group complete control over the theatre’s future.

If the proposal was approved essential improvement work would still be needed for the building to meet health and safety standards before it could be used.

Mr Geoff Morgan, the chairman of the theatre company, which has been touring the Newark district since the theatre closed, said members were keen to bring the theatre back into use.

An estimated £300,000 would be needed to restore the theatre.
