For the first time since Live Aid at Wembley in 1985, rock bands Simple Minds and The Pretenders are appearing together on the same stage.

They are part of Grandslam 2018, together with singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, which is touring the UK in August and September.

The trio of acts are stopping at Newark on Saturday to perform at Riverside Park.

Celebrating new albums, Simple Minds and The Pretenders will perform their classic hits, which have made them a distinctive part of the UK’s musical heritage, as well as fresh material.

Simple Minds, formed in Glasgow in 1977, became the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s.

They have had five UK number one albums and sold an estimated 70m albums.

Among the retro classics they will be playing at Newark are Promised You A Miracle, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Love Song, and Sanctify Yourself.

Tracks from their most recent album, Walk Between Worlds, will also feature.

The Pretenders hit number one in the UK singles chart in January 1980 with Brass In Pocket, which brought them to worldwide attention.

The hits continued throughout the 1980s, including I Go To Sleep, Back On The Chain Gang, Don’t Get Me Wrong, and 2000 Miles.

Jim Kerr, of Simple Minds, and Chrissie Hynds, who has been with The Pretenders since they were formed in 1978, were once married.

Earlier this year Jim said each was a fan of the other’s work.

Since taking time out and unleashing her new album — A Phoenix From The Ashes — this summer, KT Tunstall is promising to take the bull by the horms on the Grandslam tour.

Upgraded ticket options promise to offer concert-goers a better experience at Grandslam 2018 in Riverside Park.

The promoters, Newark-based LHG Live, have introduced a VIP upgrade for people to see Simple Minds, The Pretenders, and KT Tunstall.

The upgrade is available on existing golden circle tickets, giving concert-goers access to a VIP area with private bar and premium toilets.

Liz Doogan-Hobbs, of LHG Live, said: "We feel this can only enhance the experience of what will be the concert of the summer.

"These three artists never disappoint. For decades Simple Minds and The Pretenders have been delighting fans across the world and, with KT Tunstall joining them as their very special guest, fans in Newark and the wider area are in for a treat."

The VIP area is next to the golden circle enclosure. The upgrade is available only to golden circle ticket holders, for an extra £10.
