Steampunkers and a crowd of several hundred give three cheers as Newark's platinum jubilee beacon is lit
A crowd of several hundred people joined Steampunkers in all their finery to watch a beacon being lit in Newark Market Place last night.
The beacon was part of a national chain that celebrated the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth, who lit the first one in London.
Town Mayor Laurence Goff lit Newark's and said: "We have all gathered to celebrate the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
On her 21st birthday in 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared before us that 'My whole life, whether it be long or short, will be devoted to our service across the UK and Commonwealth'.
"This special year, I am enormously proud to have this privilege of celebrating her 70th year of public service with selfless devotion to duty as does our Queen."
He then led the crowd in three cheers.
