Advertiser Reader Letters: Time to honour pioneering female builder Emily Blagg
On the 90th anniversary of her death, is it time to now recognise and acknowledge Emily Blagg, an exceptionally intellectual woman, and her life and work in and around Newark.
She should be remembered with a blue plaque that could be displayed at Newark Palace Theatre, Blagg and Johnson, Newark Cemetery, or the two houses she lived in — 131 Lime Grove or 2 The Park, both in Newark.
Her contribution had a profound impact and has transformed the town.
She was a wonderful and incredible woman, her legacy must live on. As part of International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, let us put this tribute so other woman can be inspired by her achievements.
Emily Blagg was a pioneering woman in the building trade with Blagg and Johnson a 100 years ago. She was responsible for building the Palace Theatre and houses at The Park, Newark, next to the cemetery, and Lime Grove, also Newark.
She died on April 7, 1935, and is buried at Newark Cemetery in her brother William Stevens’ plot — plot number WH 143.
Her grave is very hard to find as her brother's full name is on the front as William Walter Price Stevens and Emily’s is on the side. — LAURENCE GOFF, Newark.
