Newark Advertiser reader letter: Time to listen to priorities of constituents

Newark deserves better than an MP who appears to prioritise personal ambition over integrity and public service. Robert Jenrick’s troubling behaviour is causing growing concern among his constituents — and rightly so.

Robert Jenrick’s sudden and selective interest in child exploitation gangs highlights his opportunistic and hypocritical approach to this extremely serious issue. As a survivor of male violence and sexual abuse, I understand the urgency of tackling these vile predators, regardless of their race or background.

Regretfully, the previous Conservative government failed to fully implement any of the 20 recommendations made by Professor Alexis Jay following her national inquiry into child exploitation gangs, despite Labour’s consistent calls for action.

I’m proud that this Labour government is taking steps to address these failures and deliver stronger safeguards to protect vulnerable children and deliver on all of Professor Jay’s recommendations. Survivors want justice and action, not empty gestures.

Robert Jenrick’s recent reference to ‘alien cultures’ is dangerous, as it unfairly stigmatises all those of a shared heritage.

Equally troubling is his amplification of Elon Musk’s social media account - despite Musk using his platform to spread misinformation about British politicians, making reckless claims about an impending civil war in the UK and his support for the far-right across Europe.

I urge Robert Jenrick to consider his choice of words and who he supports on social media more carefully. The tragic murders of Jo Cox and Sir David Amess, remind us of the devastating outcomes of unchecked hostility and hate.

When I speak to women in Newark, they share concerns about their safety in certain areas, the lack of job opportunities, and the need for better healthcare and education for their families. These are issues that the Labour government is already working hard to address after 14 years of Conservative failure — failure in which Robert Jenrick played a central role.

Isn’t it time Robert stopped prioritising his own ambitions, listened to his constituents, and started working to meaningfully to address issues that will make life better for women and everyone in Newark? — Saj Ahmad, former Labour candidate for the Newark constituency.
