Reader's letter: Time to raise political standards

More news, no ads

When David Cameron was Prime Minister I wrote to him on the topic of values and standards of this country and, by implication, those of his government. This was around the time of his Brexit referendum. There was no reply.

In our current situation, and what has gone before, we must never forget the values and standards that have been set over time.

From the time of illegal proroguing of Parliament, Paterson, Partygate, Pincher, together with the problems that have apparently been caused by both Brexit and the pandemic and the subsequent cover-ups, they have all contributed to and have damaged the Conservative Party, the country and quite possibly splitting up the United Kingdom.

In addition, and again over time, many people seem to have lost trust in politicians and their political parties, and seem to have no interest in voting in either general and even local elections.

Again, and over many past years, we have been promised reform of the Houses of Parliament, but clearly because of self-interest this will never happen.

Instead, democracy is still run (with little changes) as it was formed in the Victorian era.

But perhaps now is the time for a complete reform so that our government is brought kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, and deal more swiftly with the urgent matters of the day.

While I do not know what other readers might think, I believe we should now have a written constitution and ministerial code derived from the updating of both Erskine May and the Nolan codes, and other inputs.

We need to have proportional representation at elections.

And finally, that all candidates for election would provide a short CV on their education and work experience prior to them standing for election.

In the light of recent events, it would be interesting to hear from others. — A. M. WADDINGTON, Sutton-on-Trent.
