Top marks for tip
Users of Fiskerton tip have welcomed the reopening of the site this week after a month-long closure for improvements.
Fiskerton Household Waste Recycling Centre, on Fiskerton Road, Southwell, opened on Monday after a £90,000 facelift.
The improvements included resurfacing and bigger signs at the entrance with colour co-ordinated information about which skips to put different types of waste in.
Non-slip mats have been placed on the ramps leading to the skips and a new site office has been erected.
People were advised to use the tip at Bilsthorpe while the work took place.
A regular user of the tip, Mrs Catherine Harriss of Westgate, Southwell, said: “My greatest hope is that it stays open. We have had to fight to keep it.”
Mrs Harriss said the ramps were now safer as the wire meshing had been covered with non-slip mats and the whole site looked a lot tidier.
Mr John Rushby (66) of Leeway Road, Southwell, said there had been a 100% improvement.
“Everyone missed it when it was closed,” he said.
Mrs Wendy Fordyce (62) of Manor Close, Bleasby, said the improvements were very helpful.
“I am very pleased it has reopened. I come every few weeks, especially when I do work in the garden.”
She said it was a 20-mile round trip from her home to the alternative site at Bilsthorpe.
The work has been carried out by Veolia, which own 18 recycling sites across the county.
Veolia’s communications manager, Mr Kev Parker, said Fiskerton was one of Veolia’s better performing sites, with 69.1% of the waste brought to the tip being recycled, exceeding the target of 60%.
A household waste operative at Fiskerton tip, Miss Maggie Taylor, said the improvements were a big help as people knew which skips to put their waste in.
