Top Trumps national final is at Sherwood Forest this weekend
Sherwood Forest's visitors centre will hold the grand national final of Top Trumps this weekend.
The event will see 12 children - aged seven to 11 - from around the country compete for the popular card game's coveted title.
For the contest, Top Trumps gave contenders the freedom to design a pack of cards based on the theme 'Our Amazing World' which had an overwhelming number of entries. The best 12 creations have been chosen to compete in Britain's grand finals taking place on Saturday.
The game which first hit shop shelves in 1977 is played by between two and six players who are dealt their cards face down before a candidate reads out one statistics - usually from five categories - that they think has the best chance of winning, with the aim to getting all cards by 'trumping' opponents.
Marketing executive at Top Trumps, Katie Lee said candidates' design ideas for the theme 'Our Amazing World' reflected real compassion for the nature amid current climate issues and concerns, adding the company wanted to raise awareness of how "special" the planet is.
"We were very pleasantly overwhelmed by the entries we received - the vast majority of students focused on topics from Global Warming to Oceans to Food production from around the World to feed the planet.”
Since starting out, more than 50 million Top Trumps packs have been produced across more than 1,000 different themes including Dinosaurs, Harry Potter and Great British Bakes.
Responding to the event coming to Sherwood, Sally Granger, the visitor centre's experience manager, said she was "delighted" the local forest had been chosen for the competition's final, especially in light of all the kids' thought-provoking entries.
She said: “We’re incredibly excited to be hosting the UK Top Trumps Grand Finals. The theme of ‘Our Amazing World’ is extremely close to our hearts – and it’s wonderful that Britain’s children are so out-looking in their vision.”
Top Trumps has for more than 40 years been a cool cult classic, capturing the heartbeat of the public in 16 different languages that will no doubt bring energy and excitement to the area.
