Newark will once again play host to international cycling with the return of the Tour of Britain for another year.

After weeks of speculation it has now been confirmed that stage four of this year’s tour will finish in Newark.

The six day race will stretch the length of the country, starting in Kelso in the Scottish Borders on Tuesday, September 3 and finishing in Felixstowe on Sunday, September 8.

Stage four was the last to be announced by British Cycling and will be split between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and is supported by the new East Midlands Combined Authority.

On Friday, September 6, the stage will begin in Derby outside the Derby Arena, and end at the finishing line in Newark later that day.

A full route is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, said: "It is great to be welcoming the Tour of Britain back to the East Midlands for the third year running.

“The race brings real excitement to the region and has the potential to inspire more people to get out on their bikes and enjoy the benefits of cycling.

"Events like the Tour of Britain are key to helping our visitor economy thrive and showcase, to a significant international audience, all that Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire have to offer."

Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, Paul Peacock, said: “We’re really pleased to hear that Newark will be hosting the finish line again.

“We have built up a really good relationship with the Tour over the years and it is a really great day out for people.

“Although the route hasn’t been announced yet, I’m also looking forward to showcasing the different parts of Newark and Sherwood to an international audience.”

British Cycling Events Managing Director, Jonathan Day, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing top-level racing and the joy of cycling to communities across the country in September, with six stages to showcase the very best of Britain’s character and terrain.

“We’re enormously thankful to the local partners who are supporting the delivery of this year’s race, as we look to build on the momentum of June’s successful Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Women.

“I’ve no doubt that their communities will be out in force to welcome the riders, and make it another memorable week of racing to cap off a huge summer of cycling.”
