Reader’s letter: Town market is a sad sight
It's sad to see Newark market so deserted on market days but it's hardly unique in that.
Doncaster, Barnsley, Chest-erfield and Grantham markets are all shadows of their former selves.
In the last 30 years Doncaster market has shrunk by over 50% and most of that 50% is now a carpark.
Barnsley has lost even more and that lose is now a shopping mall and cinema.
We don't want to see Newark market place become a carpark and we certainly don't need any more shops.
The Market Place thrives on special occasions — it was packed for the Christmas lights switch-on.
The answer is more event days but only sparingly — too many of them and people will get bored.
We have to accept shopping habits have changed, it's time to use the Market Place for other things or it will end up as a carpark. —
