A travel agent with a Newark store saw a significant rise in holiday inquiries in the first week of the new year despite the coronavirus situation.

The UK’s largest independent travel agent Hays Travel, which has a shop on Stodman Street, said it had also seen a large uptake in bookings.

Currently, most countries are asking for proof of vaccination status or a negative covid test before travel.

44% of Hays Travel customers are booking for summer 2022, while 22% are travelling within the next three months — with the most popular destinations being Spain, Dubai, Turkey and the USA.

Other customers are booking worldwide cruises and other ‘bucket list’ destination holidays for 2022/23 and even 2024, to be sure of getting their first choice of price and accommodation.

More than half (53%) of the customers booking holidays are new to Hays Travel.

Dame Irene Hays, owner and chair of Hays Travel, said: “Our customers are looking for support to help them choose the holiday they want, and for the travel agent to be there for them before they travel, when they’re away, and when they come back.

“We have already seen a significant increase in inquiries across all our divisions, in branches as well as online.

"It is early days in the new year peak time for booking holidays, but it’s clear there’s still huge demand for holidays and that people are very much looking forward to being able to go away this year.

“Our advice is to use a reputable travel agent who will help you through the latest advice and take advantage of guarantees such as our Peace of Mind Guarantee, insurance and flexible booking arrangements.”
