Traveller site quota exceeded

Ollerton has taken its fair share of Gipsy and Traveller sites and should not be expected to take more in the near future, according to a town councillor.

The chairman of Ollerton and Boughton Town Council’s planning committee, Mr Ray Shilling, said the council had supported applications in the past, but now felt they had enough.

He said: “Quite simply, the requirement by Newark and Sherwood District Council is to provide 84 new pitches in the district over the next few years, of which 18% needed to be provided in the Ollerton area and the rest in other areas such as Newark.

“We have provided 35 Gipsy sites in Ollerton, which is considerably more than our requirement and we feel that a line should be drawn.

“Now we have met our requirement we feel we should be objecting to applications purely because of the numbers and for no other reason.

“The district council has another two years to provide these pitches and we think they should explore other sites in other areas before they come back to look at Ollerton again.”

Mr Shilling said he was pleased the district council supported the town council’s objection to an application that would have seen a paddock at The Stables Caravan Park divided into four plots to provide sites for one family.

Mr Shilling said: “We are always pleased when the district council supports our decisions.

“It makes no difference to us whatsoever who makes an application when we make reaction to a planning application.”

Mr Shilling said in a few years the town council might consider supporting applications for Gipsy and Traveller sites again.

He said: “The district council has a few years to meet this requirement so we can look at things again in a couple of years.”Ollerton has taken its fair share of Gipsy and Traveller sites and should not be expected to take more in the near future, according to a town councillor.
