A provisional route has been produced for next year’s Outlaw Triathlon.

The event was held in the county for the first time this year, prompting complaints from residents and businesses.

However, it will go ahead again next year after the organisers agreed to work closely with local councils and communities.

Competitors complete a 112-mile cycle ride, a 26.2-mile run and a 2.4-mile swim.

During the cycling portion of the challenge competitors cycle on roads in the district.

This year, businesses and residents complained that roads were closed for the event in August with little or no warning and that the event caused major disruption especially to those living along the A612, some of whom said they were stranded as one-way systems and road closures were put in place.

A provisional route for next year's would see competitors travelling from Holme Pierrepont along the A6097 to Oxton before doing two laps of a route through Halam, Southwell, Upton, Averham, Caunton, Wellow, Eakring, Bilsthorpe and Farnsfield.

An organiser, Mr Iain Hamilton, said the cycling route was still evolving.

He said: “We are grateful and excited at the prospect of holding the Outlaw Triathlon again, having learnt lessons from August’s event.

“We are working closely with the local authorities and have visited a number of the parish councils for feedback on a proposed new route.

“Our main lesson learnt from 2010 was to avoid the disruption caused by the road closure along the A612 between Lowdham and Southwell. We can confirm that athletes will not be following this part of the route again.

“We will continue to work closely with local authorities to ensure that the event brings benefits to the area and that athletes are encouraged to visit, stay, and generate economic benefit during their training and preparation.”
